Welcome to Newsletter No. 9

News from Kings’ College, London
We are delighted to announce that Alex and Miles made their first visit to Charlotte’s Lab at Kings College, London. They also got the chance to spend time with the lab’s newly appointed biomedical scientist. It was quite a day; there was a lot of information to take in. Alex and Miles were privileged to be given a presentation by one of the professors on the team, as well by Charlotte’s Lab’s aforementioned biomedical scientist. The presentation focused on tumour classification. The discussion centred on methylation based classification and how diagnosis will move forward at a far faster pace and with greater accuracy. The research in Charlottes’ Lab has demonstrated that 12% of the 32 samples tested so far had a diagnosis more accurate than that initially considered. The presentation and tour of Charlotte’s LAB is available to watch on YouTube by clicking here.

Thanks to all the generous donations, we’ve done it!
We are delighted to announce that we have raised a staggering £201,000 since the launch of Charlotte’s BAG, in October 2016. All money raised has gone to Kings College, London and is ring-fenced for Charlotte’s Lab.

Nala, Rescue Cat of the Year 2019
Miles and Alex attended a star-studded awards ceremony at The Savoy Hotel, London, on 8th August 2019. The award ceremony was hosted by Cats Protection, a UK charity dedicated to the welfare and rehoming of stray and unwanted cats. When Alex entered Nala, she had no idea Nala would win Rescue Cat of the Year. Alex and Miles met ex-Arsenal and England goalkeeper, David Seaman, and his wife, who judged Nala’s category, as well as other celebrities, including Rick Wakeman.

Poster campaign, Brighton and Hove Buses
We are delighted to announce that, for the third December running, Brighton and Hove Buses displayed a poster promoting Charlotte’s BAG on 96 of their buses. As you may remember, Charlotte has a bus named after her – one of the 27 fleet which she regularly used to go into Brighton.

Brighton Latest TV
Alex and Miles were invited to be interviewed by their local TV station. This was screened in the week commencing Monday 4th November at 8.30 pm.

Brighton Power 100
Alex happened to be glancing through Twitter and noticed that Brighton’s top 100 most influential people had been announced. Last year, Alex was amazed to see that she had made the list, appearing 87th. This year, Alex has moved up to 45th. She didn’t even expect to be nominated this year, so this was a really lovely surprise.

Your Cat Magazine
Alex was approached by the above magazine to be interviewed for their January 15th 2020 publication. Nala will be 16 years old on January 16th, so the timing is rather fitting!

Next Year’s Team Charlotte challenge
Next July, having walked from Eastbourne to Brighton in July 2018 (23 miles overnight) and Charing Cross to Hove in June 2019 (58 miles overnight), Alex, Miles and their group of intrepid volunteers, will be walking from Southampton to Hove. This will be at least 60 miles! More details to follow.

Can you help with our summer 2020 school raffle in conjunction with the walk?
We would be grateful if anyone can donate prizes for the above raffle. Prizes can be sent to the PO Box number or directly to the school.
